Dear Elected Officials,

Every time there is an election I always cringe when I hear people arguing to abolish the Electoral College. As I truly believe that it does have a purpose in preserving the voice of those who live outside of our cities, and grow the crops or livestock that feeds our country. With that said, I also understand the bizarre reality created by a system that produces a winner who lost the popular vote. It should make sense that what the majority of what people want as government should reflect that voice. However, it ends up being an argument of whose voice matters more, and I think it’s an unanswerable question.

That’s why I think that both side have a great point and that we should alter our system rather than abolish it. Use a bi-partisan committee and new Census data to redraw congressional districts in each state based off of voter trends for the last decade. That way blue votes in “red” states may impact elections and red votes in “blue” states may also impact.

Overall, I think it would ask our candidates to appeal to the entire nation and not just a select group of “swing” states. It would encourage voters to vote regardless of where they live, and improve our process of democratically electing a government that is truly representative of people across the country. Therefore, I’m asking for signatures of others to help bring to your attention that I’m not alone in this feeling and that we the people would like to see change.

Sincerely,

A Voting Citizen of the United States of America
