Get Menstrual Products in all school bathrooms!
Over 500 million women do not have access to feminine hygiene products. According to Thinx and PERIOD, one in five teenagers in the United States have struggled to afford period products. Many schools in the USA do not have free menstrual products in the restroom for their students with periods. Not only is it embarrassing to go ask the nurse for a thick Un comfy pad (making us feel like we are wearing a diaper), but many students do also not feel it is ok to ask for help. Only three states—California, Illinois, and New York— require schools serving students in grades six through twelve to provide menstrual products in women’s restrooms for free. This then forces students to bring products from home if they have access. Low-income homes do not have access to these menstrual products which are viewed at as menstrual products are largely viewed as luxuries rather than the necessities. The “tampon tax,” a tax on menstrual products that currently exists in 36 states, further aggravates the issue, and in a country where nearly 14 percent of girls and women live below the poverty line compared to just 11 percent of boys and men, it is crucial for menstrual equity to exist. We need to start recognizing that this a natural thing that cannot be hide from the world. Get Menstrual products in our schools!
