Change the American National Anthem to "God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood
Change the American National Anthem to "God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood
The Issue
The current anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner, is too outdated. Adopted in the 1930's, it hasn't aged well. God Bless the USA came out in the 1980's and it still slaps. No one has the Star-Spangled Banner on their playlist, except for those that are practicing to sing it at a sporting event.
The Star-Spangled Banner is just so boring. Everyone is ready for it to be over as soon as it starts. There's even so much controversy over kneeling, sitting, standing, etc. Meanwhile, God Bless the USA has the line "And I'd gladly stand up next to you." If I've learned anything from the Cha Cha Slide, it's that if a song tells you to do something, you're statistically 85% more likely to do it.* But I don't know how you could remain seated when God Bless the USA comes on. Song is a bop.
Referring back to the line, "And I'd gladly stand up next to you," feels just as relevant now as it did when it was written. Standing up is the action of challenge. (Such as Luke standing up to Darth Vader in Star Wars. Or Kanye standing up to Taylor Swift at the VMAs in 2009.) The challenge we choose to address is one that we all Glady work towards. "Next to you" envelopes a sense of camaraderie and togetherness. The feeling of standing next to one another, not behind or in front of, as equals. We all unite together in defiance of wrong doings and injustice. United we stand.
"Where at least I know I'm free, And I won't forget the men who died, Who gave that right to me." This phrase represents all the people that have fought for our freedom. George Washington, Thomas Paine, Martin Luther King Jr., Susan B. Anthony, W.E.B. Du Bois, Neil Armstrong, Thomas Jefferson, Oprah Winfrey, Hulk Hogan**, your uncle that fought in the war, and many many more. More than you could ever put into a single list.
In conclusion, God Bless the USA would be a good start to the changes needed to the USA in these changing times. And as the forefront of change in the world, how can we stand to have such a weak theme song? Thank you for your time, and God Bless the USA.
*A study that definitely happened proves this.
**His theme song also has a good case for replacing the SSB.
P.S. God Bless the USA even mentions Detroit.
