Muslims and Progressives Call for Representation in Presidential Appointments
The Issue
A group of Muslim and progressive leaders are calling on President Joe Biden to recognize the full contributions of Muslim Americans in society. These leaders call upon the President to appoint Muslims and progressives to key cabinet positions. Muslim Americans and progressive organizers played a critical role in defeating Donald Trump in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, and other key battleground states with various voter mobilization efforts.
The Biden-Harris administration’s intent to initiate its civil rights agenda with the repeal of the Muslim Ban is reassuring step. Further, we appreciate the 2020 Democratic Party’s condemnation of “the decades-long campaign to demonize and dehumanize the Muslim faith community, which has led to increased rates of violence and discrimination targeting American Muslims or those perceived to be Muslim.” We envision the expansion of a civil rights agenda per the 2020 Democratic Party Platform, which states “to fully confront the legacy of systemic and structural racism, it is time to examine, confront and dismantle the government programs, policies and practices that have unfairly targeted American Muslims as security threats.”
To rectify the wrongs done to the Muslim American community as well as to respect the values of social justice and equality that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris espouse, we request the incoming Biden administration to give wide representation to marginalized communities, including Muslim Americans, in the presidential cabinet. As Muslim Delegates and Allies, the Alliance to Save and Protect America from Infiltration by Religious Extremists (ASPAIRE), American Muslim Democratic Caucus, and Center for Pluralism, we suggest the following presidential appointments:
Secretary of Interior: Rep. Deb Haaland, U.S. House Representative, New Mexico
White House Deputy Climate Change Coordinator: Ali Zaidi, New York State energy official
Deputy Secretary of Labor: Julie Su
Associate Attorney General: Vanita Gupta
Secretary of Agriculture: Rep. Marcia Fudge, U.S. House Representative, Ohio
Deputy Small Business Administration Deputy Administrator: Dilawar Syed
Surgeon General: Dr. Vivek Murthy
Office of Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), Mehrsa Baradaran, law professor at UC Irvine
