Preserve Single-Sex Spaces and Uphold the Rights of Women

The Issue

In a world where the definition of "woman" is increasingly contested, it is essential that we, as a society, uphold the sanctity of women's spaces. Over the last few years, the concept of women's exclusive rooms such as washrooms, changing rooms, domestic violence shelters, and women-only hospital wards have been challenged. The effect is such that it feels as if the word 'woman' holds less significance than it once did. These spaces were established to provide a safe, haven for women and their distinctive needs. They serve as not just physical spaces, but also symbolic boundaries, ensuring that women's rights, safety, and dignity are revered.

In an era where the rights of women are already under great stress globally, it is of paramount importance that single-sex spaces continue to exist, and that the rights and privileges associated with the concept of 'woman' are not diluted. Just to give an example, over 90% of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault are women (National Crime Victimization Survey 2018). A space where a woman can feel more secure is essential.

The last three decades have seen harmonious cohabitation between women and transwomen of all walks of life. This harmony should be fostered, and the rights of both groups should be protected without the dilution of either. It's personal to me because female-exclusive rooms serve as undisturbed quarters, affording its inhabitants a level of comfort, security, and camaraderie that borderlines on the therapeutic. We implore that these spaces be preserved and the rights of women be an inviolable covenant that must be defended with utmost zeal. Please, sign this petition to ensure the sanctity of such exclusive spaces and to uphold the rights of women.
