Preserve Bayview School Zone: No Shift for Observatory Hill South of Weldrick

The Issue

Petition Against the Boundary change by YRDSB: Addresses south of Weldrick Road East and west of Bayview Avenue will hold at Langstaff SS.

Description:

The recent unexpected school boundary alterations have blindsided our community at the newly developed Observatory Hill at Bayview & 16th Ave. Reassigning our children from Bayview Secondary School, which is in close proximity, to the more distant Langstaff Secondary School challenges the premises on which many of us chose to live, invest, and pay substantial property taxes in this community.

We, the residents of Observatory Hill, express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the recent decision to change our school boundaries without any prior consultation with the parents and community members. This unilateral decision, communicated only via a letter, undermines the trust and partnership we expect from our educational institutions. We urge the YRDSB to prioritize transparent communication and active engagement with parents and stakeholders before making significant decisions that impact our children's education and well-being.

It has come to our attention that the YRDSB's clearly laid out protocol for boundary changes has been conspicuously overlooked in this instance. The carefully stipulated timeframes for consultation, review, and approval—ensuring transparency, stakeholder involvement, and appropriate planning—appear to have been sidestepped. Such deviation from established guidelines not only undermines the trust of the community but also raises pressing concerns about the integrity and accountability of the board's decision-making process.

Boundary Change Protocol by YRDSB (which was completely ignored in this instance): https://www2.yrdsb.ca/board-plans/school-boundary-information-and-presentations#:~:text=Elementary%20School%20boundary%20changes%20can,advance%20of%20the%20implementation%20year

Key Points of Concern:

Commitment, Trust & Property Taxes: Purchasing a home is a monumental decision, influenced not just by school zones but also by the value we expect in return for our investment. We pay high property taxes with the expectation of accessing quality educational facilities nearby. An abrupt shift from Bayview SS feels like a breach of the trust we placed in our community's infrastructure.

Consistency in Primary Education: We urge the board to discuss entry of our primary school children into Bayview Hill Elementary.

Proximity & Traffic Challenges: Bayview SS is a logical choice given its closeness. Redirecting our children to Langstaff SS means they would have to navigate through the peak traffic at Yonge, adding unnecessary commute time and potential safety concerns.

Education & Well-being: Students thrive in stable environments. The sudden shift could interrupt their educational paths, affecting academic achievements, social relationships, and extracurricular commitments. Many of the parents in the community purchased in these neighbourhoods in a commitment to providing our children with the best possible education. There is a clear difference between Bayview SS and Langstaff SS with regards to rankings, test scores, and quality of education.

Property Values & Community Investment: Our investments in this community were influenced by its school zones. This unexpected boundary change could inadvertently impact property values, challenging the very essence of our initial investment decisions.

What We Ask For:

A thorough explanation of the reasoning behind these boundary changes, given our community's clear geographical alignment with Bayview schools and the substantial property taxes we contribute.

Immediate reconsideration of this decision, ensuring that the voices of our community are genuinely heard and respected.

Engagement opportunities where parents and stakeholders can openly discuss the implications and potential alternatives to this decision.
