The Issue

Librairies have always been safe havens for communities. They are places where people of all ages come to explore, learn, and grow. My personal story is a testament to the profound impact libraries have on our lives. My daughter, for instance, is an avid participant in the library's reading challenges. These programs inspire her to read, improve her literacy skills, and keep her motivated. It's heartbreaking to think that the adult & teen programming offered by the Southeast Regional Library in Estevan and Weyburn are now at risk.

The decision to eliminate adult & teen programmer roles in these libraries due to staffing reductions is a significant loss to the community. Adult & teen programming is essential for fostering lifelong learning, cultural awareness, and community engagement. Those attending these programs not only acquire new skills but also form connections with fellow community members, reducing isolation and encouraging civic participation.

The importance of adult programming & teen is reflected in many success stories. For example, various library programs have improved digital literacy skills, supported job seekers, and provided countless opportunities for personal development and creativity. Eliminating these roles would rob the community of these benefits, leaving a void that cannot be filled by a single programmer per division.

Moreover, libraries increasingly serve as community hubs and not just places to borrow books. They offer resources that are especially crucial in smaller towns like Estevan and Weyburn, where facilities for adult & teen education and community activities might already be limited.

Instead of cutting these essential roles, the Southeast Regional Library should explore alternative solutions. This could include securing additional funding, seeking community partnerships, or reconsidering the resource allocation among divisions to ensure that both Estevan and Weyburn can continue offering robust adult & teen programming.

Please join me in urging the Southeast Regional Library to reconsider this decision and preserve the adult & teen programmer roles. Sign this petition to voice your support for maintaining vibrant, inclusive, and resourceful library programs that benefit everyone in the community.
