Increase the penalty for interfering with a corpse in QLD.

The issue

In 2012, Alison Bayden-Clay was killed by her husband Gerard in her own home. Despite his conviction for murder, Gerard Bayden-Clay successfully appealed, and it was replaced with a conviction for manslaughter. Whether he intended to kill his wife or not, there is little doubt that following her death he attempted to conceal his involvement by moving and dumping her body near a river bed. He was charged with the related offence of interfering with a corpse, which carries a penalty of just two (2) years! The bodies of Daniel Morcome and Norman Cheney (the 'body in the barrel') were also treated with similar contempt by their killers (and accessories). Interfering with a corpse is the final act of contempt for a human life. In most cases where this offence is preferred against an accused, the sentence is imposed alongside a more severe penalty (like Murder or Manslaughter), and is most often served concurrently. This means that it carries no real penalty. This type of behaviour needs to be treated seriously, and a penalty reflective of its criminality imposed. We, the undersigned, call upon the Premier of Queensland to make the following changes; 1) Increase the (manifestly inadequate) penalty for the offence of Interfering with a corpse. 2) Ensure that any penalty for this offence MUST be served cumulative to any other sentence.
