Summer at St. Thaddeus was one of the best times of year! We looked forward to our church picnic held in July at the Forest Preserves. The Dan Ryan Woods was close and convenient. Located on the Southside of Chicago; it was just 4 miles away from the parish.
St. Thaddeus Picnic was held in a beautiful, relaxing location. The Dan Ryan Woods grove had a covered shelter, trees with ample shade, and a nearby bathroom. The men took great pride securing that location. On January 1st of each year, they applied for the location. They would arrive early and prepare the grove for the picnic.
The picnic included individual families’ tables and our church sponsored food table. At the church table, everybody would volunteer to bring hot and cold side dishes as well as the meat to be cooked. The men organizations would barbeque and bring libations. Good food, good drink and good company!
Through the years, we entertained ourselves by playing soft ball, card games, children’s activities and music. We communed with nature, our family and friends.
