St. Thaddeus Church is Hallowed Ground we are asking that the history of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church be recognized and celebrated. We do not want St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church to close.

On April 18, 2016, the Archdiocese of Chicago notified the parishioners that it would close and merge St. Thaddeus.

St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church is located 9550 South Harvard Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60628. St. Thaddeus Church has been a stakeholder since 1959. St. Thaddeus has provided a home for African- American Catholics. Members reside on the South Side of Chicago. This includes but is not limited to the following neighborhoods: Beverly; Brainerd; Lillydale; Princeton Park; Roseland; Washington Heights; and West Chesterfield.

It  provided an educational resource for the South Side as St. Thaddeus School and the Chicago Public Schools (Banner School).

St. Thaddeus Church provides spiritual leadership. It is a viable member of the community. It is a resource for: community organizations, food pantry, voting precinct locations, meetings, performances (acting troupe), clubs, Scouting, and social gatherings.

We celebrate St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church’s great historical significance for African-Americans on the South Side of Chicago. It is “Hallowed ground: a site of African-American Memories”. “One cannot tell the story of America without preserving and reflecting on the places where African- Americans have made history.” - Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)

St. Thaddeus Church is Hallowed Ground .

We are asking that you consider the history of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church and not close our church.

The goal of this petition is to: 1. Notify the Archdiocese of Chicago that St. Thaddeus’ history of African- American Catholics makes it a Hallowed Ground and it should be saved. 2. Ask people to sign to show their support for St. Thaddeus Church 3. Ask people to share their experiences of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church and School in the comments.

We must sustain and preserve African-American Catholic Parishes. Our history matters! St. Thaddeus Catholic Church is “hallowed ground”.
