Abortion rights in Poland
The Issue
If you support the women's right to have a safe and legal abortion in Poland, then sign this petition, educate yourself and spread awareness.
The only way we can influence the ruling is by showing the Polish government the momentum of this movement, for which we must attract as much attention as possible, including global attention.
What we demand from the Polish government is to consider and prioritize the health and well-being of the Polish women. Listen to their needs and concerns, so that they don't have to risk their lives in a pandemic to protest for their fundamental rights. And give Polish citizens their abortion rights.
Abortion in Poland
In Poland, as of 28 October 2020, abortion is banned except in the following circumstances:
1. When the woman's life or health is endangered by the continuation of pregnancy.
2. When the pregnancy is a result of a criminal act.
3. When there is a high probability of a severe and irreversible fetal impairment.
The third case was ruled to be unconstitutional on 22 October 2020. The ruling will take effect from the day of its publication in the Journal of laws. Abortion in cases of severe foetal disabilities accounts for 98% of terminations carried out in Poland, so this ruling will basically ban abortion in almost all cases. There is very little institutional support in Poland for families with disabled children, leaving parents to fend for themselves once the child is born.
Thousands of polish people are on the streets protesting against the ruling and for abortion rights. It is the largest Poland has seen since the 1989 collapse of communism. In response of these mass protests, government has indefinitely delayed the implementation of the ruling.
Legal and accessible abortion is a fundamental human right
It is a matter of life and death
Making abortion illegal or making access to abortion procedures limited and hard only forces women to turn to illegal and often times unsafe ways to abort the fetus. According to WHO, 3 out of 10 (29%) of all pregnancies, and 6 out of 10 (61%) of all unintended pregnancies, ended in an induced abortion. Among these, 1 out of 3 were carried out in the least safe or dangerous conditions.
Each year between 4.7% – 13.2% of maternal deaths can be attributed to unsafe abortion.
Almost every abortion death and disability could be prevented through sexuality education, use of effective contraception, provision of safe, legal induced abortion, and timely care for complications.
Limited and restricted access to legal and safe abortions is a violation of their human rights.
Poland has a duty to protect the health of its citizens and this ruling is not considering the health and well-being of women. Most importantly, women should have right to their own bodies, they should have the right to choice that will determine their lives.
Thank you for your time and support.
