The issue

Sepsis is your bodies overwhelming reaction to an infection.  Anyone can develop sepsis, young and old, fit and healthy.

A 2021 study published in the JAMA Network Open (American Medical Association) reveals that 3 out of 4 sepsis survivors suffer from a new medical, cognitive, or psychological diagnosis. The most common issues being neuromusculoskeletal diagnosis (weakness or paralysis), problems with the heart, lungs, and other organs. Cognitive disorders such as 'brain fog'. lack of concentration and memory loss.       Read full study

When I survived sepsis 16 years ago there was no mention of Post Sepsis Syndrome.  I was discharged after 7 weeks in hospital and expected to get on with my life.  I so wished I could, but Post Sepsis Syndrome is a constant reminder of my fight with sepsis.  I had no physical rehabilitation, no support after coming off a feeding tube, and left to navigate the mine field that is PSS alone.  The daily hell of PSS can be overwhelming.  But this is not my fight alone.  I belong to many online support groups for sepsis survivors around the world and the cries for help are a global issue.  When I see posts of survivors saying " I wish I never survived sepsis", "my GP does not believe in Post Sepsis Syndrome", or their doctors saying, "you are over sepsis now, so there is nothing wrong with you". These posts are heartbreaking to see.  Then there is the lack of understanding from family and friends that survivors face, we are out of hospital, so we must be fine!!

After discussions with other sepsis advocates I was made aware that Post Sepsis Syndrome does not have an International Classification of Disease by the World Health Organisation ICD-11 , yet Long Covid does!!.

This needs to change so we can get the medical, psychological, and financial help we deserve. We need Post Sepsis Syndrome to be recognised by the WHO and then the medical profession globally.  We fought for our lives, now we fight to live.

Anyone can develop Sepsis from a infection, this a petition for Sepsis Survivors now and in the future all over the world.
