Pass Casey's Law in West Virginia to save lives of young adults with addiction.

Pass Casey's Law in West Virginia to save lives of young adults with addiction.
The Issue
Casey's Law gives parents, relatives or friends a tool to get treatment for their loved one who suffers from the disease of Addiction. It allows parents, relatives or friends to intervene on a loved one regardless of age and without any criminal charges. This law allows a family member or friend to petition for court-ordered treatment for their loved one’s Addiction to alcohol and/or other drugs. Casey's Law is currently in Kentucky and Ohio.
The Matthew Casey Wethington Act for Substance Abuse Intervention is named for Matthew Casey Wethington, who died in 2002 from a heroin overdose at the age of 23. Casey was an energetic young man who enjoyed life until it was “taken” by drugs. Casey never intended to become addicted to drugs when he used the first time. What he did not realize was that his using would progress from abusing to dependence and then to the disease of addiction. Although his parents tried to get him help, there was no law that could force someone into treatment because he was an adult. After Casey’s death his parents lobbied for a change. “Casey’s Law” passed on April 9, 2004, and took effect July 13, 2004.
Losing a child is every parent's nightmare. When a person is in the throes of addiction they can only think of getting their next fix to keep from getting sick. They are not thinking about recovery and cannot make responsible decisions. That's when family members need to intervene to save their life. We need Casey's Law in West Virginia to give parents and family members the power to help adult loved ones that are not capable of helping themselves. Casey's Law would allow parents to obtain court-ordered inpatient treatment for their adult children with addiction. Or help children help their parents suffering with addiction. Please help us help our adult family members with this dreadful disease.

Teresa AnsellPetition StarterI am a healthcare professional in the Charleston/South Charleston, WV community. I have two sons and three grandchildren. One of my sons, age 33, has a substance abuse problem. He also suffers from an anxiety disorder. He desperately needs help but is unwilling to go for treatment. I need the power to put him into treatment before he overdoses and die on opioids, benzodiazapines or heroin. I am asking the WV Legislature to please pass Casey's Law to give me the ability to get my son the treatment he needs to live.
