The Issue

My name is Sheri Kirby and my sister, Tammie Goodson, was wrongfully placed on the Virginia Sex Offender Registry.  Tammie has been clean of drugs and alcohol for over 20 years. Our family believes that everyone deserves true justice, and everyone also deserves a chance to heal.  My sister was struggling with addiction when the following events happened. Due to her struggle, our mother had custody of two of her children and I had custody of her oldest son, a teenager at that time.  One day, I contacted Tammie because I had a feeling that her son might be having a physical relationship with an older woman. There was no proof and all I had was a feeling. Both Tammie and I confronted the woman who sometimes watched the boy when I was at work and after school. The woman and my nephew strongly denied that anything was happening and agreed to avoid "the appearance" of an improper relationship. We also forbid my nephew from seeing the woman.  We told the woman that if we found any proof that things were inappropriate that we would go to the police. Several weeks later, we received information, and we immediately went to the police. During the investigation, both my nephew and the woman admitted to a physical relationship and the woman was arrested, charged, and convicted. My nephew was placed in a special center. What we never expected was that both Tammie and I would be arrested and charged as if we had had an inappropriate relationship with the teenager (Tammie's son and my nephew). It was argued that we knew and condoned the behavior, which is not true. Why would we go to the police and report it, if that was true? Tammie had a no contact order and couldn't be near her son at that time. The charges were changed for both of us, but Tammie's charge required her to register as a violent sex offender for life. The basis for her upgraded charge was that she was his mother and should have known sooner even though she didn't have custody of him.  Tammie was called the "Granny Predator Next Door" and her life has been a living nightmare. Two Virginia Commonwealth attorneys and a judge have supported her removal from the registry. The judge even told her that if he had the power in his court, he would remove her. Virginia has restored her voting rights and authorized her to be a foster mother to several children, but they won't remove her from the registry. If they thought she was a truly violent predator, would they bring children to her home for her to care for them? She ran both a battered woman's shelter and a substance abuse recovery group for women. The state sent her women to help and yet, they won't help her. Again, she has been drug and alcohol free for over 20 years. We need your help to get Tammie Goodson immediately removed from the Virginia Registry. My sister owns her past mistakes and admits that she is not the mother of the year, but she does not deserve to be on the registry. Please sign and share this petition and ask others to do the same. Thank you for reading and you do not have to pledge money to sign this petition.
