The Issue

Phillipa Demetrius, lived and breathed life into everything this block needed until the day she sat down for her last nap.

She fed everyone from the fruits of her hard work. Neighbors, friends, family and even the neighborhood cats knew they could count on her. She carried a deep dedication to being the love in the community that she believed needed to exist.

My grandmother was a major pillar on the block we knew as home. Her door was open, her table had food, and her presence brought people together in ways that defined what community truly means.

For our family and for many others in the neighborhood, her life represents the spirit of Queens. The kind of neighbor who shows up, who gives, who cares, and who leaves a mark on everyone she meets.

It is only right that she is remembered in the place she helped shape. We are asking that the intersection of 183rd Street and 140th Avenue in Queens, New York be co-named “Phillipa Demetrius Way.”

Honoring her in this way ensures that her name, her love, and her legacy will always remain on the block she made her own.

We respectfully ask community members, neighbors, and local leaders to support this effort and sign this petition to help honor her memory.
