The Issue

                                                                        Joint Statement

We, the undersigned the concerned citizens of India, are profoundly disturbed by reports of a young Baha’i who has been subjected to mock hangings, torture and severe psychological pressure for crimes he did not commit.  At a time of national crisis, the continued scapegoating of the Baha’i community by Iranian authorities is profoundly unjust and deeply concerning.

The use of torture and coercion to extract false confessions is unacceptable in any circumstances and stands in clear violation of International human rights standard. No individual should be subjected to such inhumane treatment on account of their beliefs.

We urge the Iranian authorities to immediately halt all forms of torture and ill-treatment, ensure the safety and the well-being of this young individual, and uphold their obligations under the International human rights law. We further call for his prompt release and for an end to the systematic persecution of the Baha’i community.

We call upon all people of conscience to raise their voices in support of justice, human dignity and the protection of religious freedom.
