Make Tiny Hamster Cages Illegal!

The Issue

Every day, millions of hamsters are being abused and quite frankly tortured -and nobody even knows it's happening!

Would you put a dog in a cage for its entire life? No! Because that's cruel and inhuman! Dogs need space to run and play, like a backyard! And it's the same thing with hamsters. these loveable little rodents are the joys of houses all around Canada, in fact, you might even have one yourself!

But thanks to companies like PetSmart, these hamsters are suffering every day! It has been scientifically proven that hamsters need a bare minimum of 450 square inches of uninterrupted floor space. Uninterrupted floor space means that a single cage needs to be this size, not two cages joined together.

Let's look at a couple of the most popular cages that one can buy from PetSmart.

Petsmart.ca

The 'All Living Things Tiny Tales Comfy House Small Pet Habitat'

It says in the dimensions for this product that it's 12 x 19 inches of floor space- when you multiply these to find the square inches of floor space you get...

228 square inches of floorspace. Which is about half of what a hamster needs. What's more, these cages are being marketed as not homes for a living, feeling creature - but as toys! Young kids will look at these cages an think 'how cute! I should get a hamster!'

And there's even more. So many hamsters are being bought for, and by, children who haven't done any research and are buying them as a cute little 'pocket pet' who doesn't need much care. They will continue to put them in a cheap cage, with a tiny wheel, and feed them storebought pellets and sugary treats.

Hamsters don't deserve this. Petsmart, please, please, please educate yourselves on this inhumane treatment, and take steps to make it better. Stop selling tiny cages and even smaller wheels, and update your 'PetSmart hamster Guides' to include this important information!

And if you, reading this, has a hamster, then please try to give it a better life. Spend the money, get it a better cage, do your research. Don't buy your kids a hamster to teach them responsibility unless they've proven they will take good care of it. Don't trust every Petsmart employee just because they work there, do you own reaserch.

And sign today to help others become more aware of this problem. Together, we can reach victory!
