Given the current political climate in Iran, the treatment of Iranian citizens by the Islamic regime, the events of January 2026, and the ongoing global demonstrations calling for the regime’s removal, it has become evident the Islamic Republic flag is no longer representative of the Iranian people.

The lion and sun emblem has been a significant part of Iran's history for centuries. Adopted by Persian dynasties and widely accepted by Iranians as a symbol of national pride, it stands for strength, courage, and resilience of Iran throughout history. Today, it serves as a unifying symbol for Iranians globally, especially for those who yearn for a connection to their rich heritage that transcends contemporary political agenda and religious theocricies. 

The World Cup and other international football events should serve as celebrations of diverse cultures and identities. By allowing the Lion and Sun flag at matches involving the Iranian national team, FIFA would foster greater cultural representation and acknowledge the many Iranians who identify with this historic national symbol.

While we understand that FIFA maintains protocols regarding political and national symbols at matches, there is a strong and reasonable case for special consideration given the flag’s deep cultural and historical significance, as well as its widespread support and use among Iranians around the world. Numerous polls and public demonstrations have shown that a significant portion of the Iranian diaspora , along with many people inside Iran , identify more strongly with the Lion and Sun flag than with the current state flag.

We urge FIFA and football governing bodies to reconsider their stance on this matter. The inclusion of the lion and sun flag will undoubtedly enrich the sport's inclusive spirit. Transparency, cultural homage, and freedom of expression in sports are values that FIFA champions, and this change would firmly align with them.
