The following petition draw the attention of the Wyndham Council for the Planting of Fruit Trees and Useful Trees on Nature Strips

We, the undersigned residents of the Wyndham community, are writing to propose the planting of fruit trees and other useful trees on the nature strips within our municipality. This initiative aims to promote environmental sustainability, enhance community well-being, and address specific concerns regarding the cost of living, maintenance of our drainage systems, and keeping our front yards clean from seasonal leaf falls.

Benefits of Planting Fruit Trees and Useful Trees on Nature Strips:

1.      Environmental Sustainability:

o   Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, contributing to cleaner air and a reduction in the urban heat island effect.

o   Fruit trees and other useful trees support biodiversity by providing habitats for various bird species, insects, and other wildlife.

2.      Community Well-Being:

o   Access to fresh, locally grown fruit can improve the nutritional health of residents, especially for those with limited access to fresh produce.

o   The presence of fruit trees can foster a sense of community as residents come together to care for and harvest the trees.

3.      Cost of Living:

o   Planting fruit trees can help reduce household food costs by providing residents with free, accessible fruit.

o   Useful trees such as any lemon oranges herb trees can offer additional food sources, further easing financial burdens for families.

Proposal: We request that the Wyndham Council:

1.      Conduct a feasibility study to identify suitable locations for the planting of fruit trees and other useful trees on nature strips.

2.      Collaborate with local horticultural experts, community groups, and residents to select appropriate tree species that thrive in our local climate and soil conditions while minimizing the issue of leaves damaging drainage systems and keeping front yards clean.

3.      Develop and implement a maintenance plan to ensure the health and productivity of the trees, including community involvement in care and harvesting efforts.

4.      Provide educational resources and support to residents to encourage their participation in the planting and maintenance of these trees.
