Petition to the UN: To Acknowledge Climate Emergency in Nepal and Deliver Climate Justice
The Issue
To the Secretary-General of the United Nations, UN Member States, and the International Community,
We urgently call upon the United Nations to recognise that Nepal is in a state of climate emergency and mobilise international support for climate justice.
Nepal is one of the countries least responsible for global greenhouse gas emissions, yet it is among the most vulnerable to the devastating impacts of climate change. The recent catastrophic flash floods triggered by a glacier collapse and massive debris flow in the Himalayas have caused an unprecedented humanitarian disaster. Hundreds of people have lost their lives, and thousands remain missing. Entire communities, homes, schools, roads, and livelihoods have been swept away.
Scientific experts have warned that rising temperatures are increasing glacier instability, accelerating ice melt, and making glacier-related disasters more frequent and severe across the Himalayas.
The people of Nepal did not create this crisis. Poor mountain communities, farmers, workers, women, children, and Indigenous peoples have contributed little to global emissions, yet they are paying the highest price. This is a matter of justice.
Every year, Nepalis lose their lives to climate-related floods, landslides, glacial lake outburst floods, and extreme weather events. These disasters are becoming more frequent and more destructive.
We therefore call on the United Nations and the international community to:
Officially recognize Nepal's climate emergency and the disproportionate burden faced by Himalayan communities.
Mobilize emergency humanitarian assistance for affected families and communities.
Increase climate finance for adaptation, resilience, and disaster preparedness in Nepal.
Strengthen glacier monitoring, transboundary early-warning systems, and climate-risk management across the Himalayan region.
Ensure access to the Loss and Damage Fund for communities suffering irreversible climate impacts.
Hold major historical emitters accountable for supporting countries that bear the consequences of a crisis they did not create.
Climate justice means that those least responsible for climate change should not be left alone to suffer its worst consequences.
The people of Nepal deserve protection, support, and justice.
Nepal needs climate justice. The world must act now.
