Dear Sir,

SUBJECT: URGENT CALL FOR REDESIGN AND SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS ON THE KARUNGA–ARIMI–KAMWAURA SECTIONS OF THE ELBURGON-NJORO ROAD TO PREVENT FURTHER LOSS OF LIVES

We, the concerned residents of  Elburgon do hereby write this petition with a heavy heart following the tragic accident on Thursday, 8th May 2025, at Arimi Valley - one of the most notorious black spots in Nakuru County. The incident claimed the lives of 12 people, six of whom were residents of Arimi Farm. This is not an isolated event, but part of a long and painful history of accidents in this area.

There are three extremely dangerous stretches on the road between Elburgon and Njoro:

  1. Karunga Valley
  2. Arimi Valley
  3. Kamwaura near the Molo–Njoro Constituencies border

These areas are known for their steep gradients, poor road geometry, inadequate signage, and lack of effective safety barriers or escape lanes for vehicles that lose braking control. Over the years, these valleys have become scenes of repeated fatal accidents, claiming the lives of hundreds of innocent Kenyans, including school children, farmers, businesspeople, and public transport users.

Despite numerous fatalities and repeated community outcries, no substantial interventions have ever been made. As a result, fear grips every traveler along this road, and mourning has become an all-too-familiar reality in our villages.

We therefore respectfully petition the relevant authorities to:

  • Commission an immediate road safety audit of the Elburgon–Njoro road, with specific focus on Karunga, Arimi, and Kamwaura valleys.
Redesign these road sections to reduce the gradient and improve alignment where necessary.
  • Install appropriate safety features, including guardrails, escape ramps, road signage, and speed control measures.
  • Ensure proper drainage and maintenance to prevent skidding and road surface degradation.
  • Engage the local communities in awareness and consultation to ensure all known hazards are considered in the redesign.

The loss of lives on this road is not just tragic — it is preventable. Every day that passes without intervention increases the likelihood of another deadly accident. We  urge the Ministry of Roads and Transport, KeNHA, and the County Government of Nakuru to act swiftly and decisively.

This petition is not just a plea — it is a call to action to save lives. We owe it to those we’ve lost, and to future generations who should never have to live with the same fear and grief.

Signed,

RESIDENTS ELBURGON
