The Issue

Petition Overview
We are witnessing firsthand the alarming rate at which our precious lands are being consumed by overdevelopment. This once serene state, renowned for its unique ecosystem and breathtaking landscapes, is now on the brink of losing its natural charm. From the Everglades to our pristine coastlines, development projects are rampantly springing up, robbing the state of its ecological diversity and threatening the balance of its wildlife ecosystems.

We, the undersigned residents, voters, and stewards of Florida, urgently call upon our state wide elected officials most importantly our City Commissioners to enact an immediate moratorium on all rezoning and to fundamentally reform our land-use policies.  Our state’s unique wildlife, agricultural heritage, and quality of life are under direct threat from unchecked development driven by special interests, not by the demands of the citizens, your constituents.    This petition demands a return to governance that prioritizes the long-term health of our communities and ecosystems over short-term profits for developers.

The Crisis at Hand
Florida is experiencing an unprecedented wave of over-development.  We all see Wetlands being filled, gopher tortoise bulldozed over, forests being cleared, and even permission to remove old oak trees with active Eagles nests, farmland paved over to make way for massive, high-density housing projects.  This is not sustainable growth; it is ecological and community destruction.

The consequences are already visible: increased flooding, traffic gridlock, loss of green space, and the silent disappearance of our native species.  We are sacrificing the very essence of Florida that makes it a desirable place to live.

Direct Threats to our Ecosystem

The current development model has catastrophic impacts on Florida’s delicate ecosystem.

·       Wetland Destruction:  Wetlands are Florida’s natural kidneys, filtering water, controlling floodwaters, and providing critical habitat.  Their loss leads directly to worse water quality and increased flooding risks to existing homes.

·       Endangerment of the Gopher Tortoise:  This keystone species is a state-threatened animal.  Its burrows provide shelter for over 350 other species.  Indiscriminate land clearing is decimating their populations, violating both ethical stewardship and state protections.

·       Loss of Agricultural Land:  Once prime farmland is converted to concrete, it is lost forever.  This threatens local food security, our rural economy, and the cultural identity of our state.

·       Water Resource Depletion:  High-density developments place an unsustainable strain on our aquifers and water supplies, jeopardizing the resource most fundamental to life in Florida.

Our Demands to the County Commission and to our State Representatives
We DEMAND our elected officials represent the people who elected them, not the political action committees and donors such as the special interests of Developers who fund campaigns.  We call for immediate action:

1.     PRIORITIZE CONSTITUENT NEEDS, DEMANDS, AND GOVERN WILDLIFE HABITAT –

County decisions must be made for the public good, not private gain.

·       Reject rezoning requests that compromise wildlife corridors or critical habitats.

·       Mandate comprehensive, independent environmental impact studies for all major developments.

·       Strengthen protections for gopher tortoises and other threatened species, enforcing meaningful setbacks and monitoring relocation requirements.  Residents have witnessed Gopher Tortoises bulldozed over, trying to return to their dens after land clearing, and more road deaths due to habitat loss.  Significantly increase fines when proper relocation and land clearing contractors and developers are not compliant.

2.     Cease High-Density Zoning – Immediately

Stop rezoning rural and environmentally sensitive lands for high-density residential and commercial use.

·       Implement a moratorium on high-density rezoning in areas adjacent to wetlands, conservation lands, and agricultural preserves.

·       Direct future growth to appropriate infill and already-urbanized areas with existing infrastructure.

·       Update comprehensive plans to explicitly protect green spaces and limit urban sprawl.

·       Analyze current development projects that are going to strain the current infrastructure in areas such as electric, water, and roadways, and outline how the current system can support and sustain that growth.

3.   Commissioners - special treatment and personal gain are not acceptable and should not be tolerated.

·       It's noted in many counties around the state that certain commissioners can get special land designations that the average citizen would never gain.   All commissioners should be held to a higher standard, and when that is challenged, be held accountable at the state level.

4.     Reform the influence of Special Interests, such as Large Manufacturers and Developers Money

Restore faith in local and state government by reducing the disproportionate influence of manufacturer and developer PAC funding.

·       Advocate for campaign finance reform that limits contributions from entities with businesses that exceed the community's well-being

·       Ensure all meetings with developers are publicly noticed and recorded.

·       Base land-use decisions solely on data, law, and constituent welfare, not political gain, and contributions.

Our Community’s Voice
Florida's counties have the power to put a stop to this relentless overdevelopment by instituting stricter zoning laws and comprehensive land-use plans that prioritize environmental conservation. By choosing sustainable development practices, we can preserve our state's natural habitats, protect endangered species, and ensure that future generations can enjoy Florida's unparalleled beauty.

Current statistics reveal that Florida is one of the fastest-growing states in the US.  However, without proper regulation, this growth comes at a dire environmental cost. In recent years, we've seen an increase in flooding due to the lack of permeable surfaces, a decline in native flora and fauna, and the degradation of water quality in our rivers and lakes.

The state and county governments must take immediate action by implementing comprehensive growth management strategies that include stricter zoning regulations, increased investment in green infrastructure, and incentivizing developers to adopt eco-friendly building practices. By working collaboratively with local communities, environmental organizations, and policymakers, we can create a sustainable model for growth that benefits both our economy and environment.

This petition is a direct reflection of the will of the people.  Our community values clean water, natural beauty, and sustainable planning.  Every resident of Florida needs to recognize the severity of this issue and demand change. It's not just about preserving what we have; it's about securing a sustainable future. Let’s work together to ensure that Florida remains beautiful, vibrant, and resilient for generations to come.
