Petition to Restore Thursday Adult Recreational Swim at Carbonear Swimming Pool
The Issue
Dear Council and Pool Management,
We, the undersigned, are concerned patrons of the Carbonear Swimming Pool and members of the wider public who strongly believe that adult recreational swimmers should have access to the facilities at least three times a week, on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
For many, including Brian Tucker, this swim is far more than just exercise. Brian has lived with a physical disability for many years and was recently diagnosed with spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), which is a rare, degenerative neurological condition that affects balance, coordination, mobility, and muscle control. While there is no cure, specialists emphasize that therapy is everything in slowing the progression of SCA and maintaining quality of life.
For the past year, Brian has been attending the Carbonear Swimming Pool three times a week- on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Swimming is one of the few activities that allows him to stay mobile, strengthen his body, and maintain independence. When the Thursday swim was cut, it left only Sundays and Tuesdays, creating a four-day gap between sessions. For Brian, and for many others who depend on this pool for therapy, this gap makes a significant and harmful difference.
The Thursday evening swim has also been an important part of the weekly routine for countless community members. It provided a valuable opportunity to engage in low-impact exercise, unwind, and improve overall wellness. The time was ideal for those with busy work schedules, and for some, it was the only chance to swim recreationally.
We understand that scheduling adjustments are sometimes necessary. However, we kindly and strongly urge you to reconsider this decision. Restoring the Thursday evening adult recreational swim would not only demonstrate your commitment to community wellness but would also give individuals like Brian the consistent access they need to therapy that is nothing short of life-changing.
As a community, we are open to possible adjustments, such as holding the swim from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. or considering other evening alternatives if needed.
As patrons of the Carbonear Swimming Pool and avid supporters of its facilities, we are hopeful for a positive outcome through your leadership and wisdom in prioritizing community health. Thank you for your attention, and we look forward to a solution that benefits all concerned.
Sincerely,
Concerned patrons of the Carbonear Swimming Pool and the supporting public.
