We, the undersigned, call for the resignation of Mr. Andrew Muir, Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs and Mrs. Katrina Godfrey, Permanent Secretary, Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.

In the heart of our rural community, where agriculture isn't just a profession but a way of life, we have witnessed first-hand the significant failures of DAERA under the leadership of Mr. Muir and Mrs. Godfrey, following their Department's handling of the culling of 51 cattle near Fivemiletown and the subsequent loss of confidence within Northern Ireland's farming community.

The cull has generated significant public concern and has prompted widespread criticism from farmers, rural organisations, elected representatives and members of the public. The scale of the public response, including the protest at Stormont on 10 August 2026, demonstrates the extent to which confidence in the Minister's leadership has been undermined.

While an independent external review has now been commissioned into the operation, many believe that accountability rests with the Minister responsible for the Department. Public confidence cannot be restored simply through a review if confidence in ministerial leadership has already been lost.

We therefore call for:

The resignation of the Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs
The resignation of the Permanent Secretary, Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs
Full publication of the findings and recommendations arising from the independent external review, without unnecessary delay.
A public commitment that all recommendations will be implemented in full where appropriate.
Greater transparency in DAERA's enforcement and animal welfare decision-making processes.
A renewed commitment to engage openly with Northern Ireland's farming community to rebuild trust and confidence.
Ministerial office carries responsibility as well as authority. When confidence in that leadership has been fundamentally damaged, accountability is essential to restoring public trust.

Andrew Muir and Katrina Godfrey's continuous mismanagement is no longer acceptable. We need a minister and permanent secretary who can understand and address the unique challenges our communities face, steering us towards a sustainable future.
