Petition to remove flock style (ALL ALPR) cameras from Linwood / Anoka County
Petition to remove flock style (ALL ALPR) cameras from Linwood / Anoka County
The Issue
I am a resident of Linwood, Minnesota in Anoka County, and being under constant surveillance is a major concern - I am not alone in feeling this way. My family, friends, and coworkers agree, which is why I am calling on the Anoka County Sheriff’s Department and the Linwood Town Board (along with the residents) to help in the removal of the flock & all Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) cameras from our community.
Flock cameras are an example but also known as Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs), are being installed in various areas of our county. While they are intended for enhancing public safety, they infringe on our privacy by tracking our movements without our explicit consent. As residents who values our personal freedoms, we should not have to sacrifice our privacy for security and have our 4th amendment infringed upon.
Studies have shown that the overuse of surveillance technology can give rise to instances of abuse, errors, and targeting of innocent citizens. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, these cameras can capture data that law enforcement can retain indefinitely, potentially leading to misuse. The Washington Post among other news outlets have reported cases where similar technologies have collected false plate numbers, leading to wrongful arrests. To add, MSN has reported that Police have used Flock cameras to stalk people or their exes on multiple occasions.
Furthermore, there’s little evidence to prove that these cameras significantly reduce crime rates. A report by the RAND Corporation noted that widespread camera surveillance has a minimal effect on overall crime rate reductions, often diverting resources from more impactful, community-based policing strategies.
Our community deserves to feel safe without sacrificing its right to privacy. Clear, actionable changes are needed. We propose that instead of relying on flock style cameras, the county should invest in community policing initiatives that foster trust and cooperation between law enforcement and citizens.
Please join me in advocating for a community that prioritizes its residents’ rights and freedoms. Sign this petition to urge the Anoka County Sheriff’s Department and the Linwood Town Board (along with the residents) to remove Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) cameras from our area. Together, let’s ensure Linwood and Anoka County remains a place where privacy and security go hand in hand. Please add your signature to our cause today.
