Petition to release elephant Prahladan from chains including Motorcycle Chains
The Issue
Enclosed herewith is the photograph of Elephant named Prahladan which is paraded at Panthalam Mahadeva Temple ten days ago. Now today, this Elephant is paraded at Sakthikulangara Temple in Kollam District. The owner of this Elephant is one Unni who is the owner of Lakshmi Jewellery near Anayadi. This Elephant was donated to Anayadi Narasimhaswamy Temple 2 years ago, but the temple authorities handed it over to Mr. Unni as the Elephant does not have any mandatory ownership certificate as per the Wild Life Protection Act 1972. Now, this Elephant is transferred from one festival ground to another with wounds all over the body and tightened with Motor Cycle chain which is illegal as per the provisions of Wild Life Protection Act 1972 and PCA Act 1960. The mahout of the Elephant named Ismail Shaji and its festival contractor Vishnu are persons known for inflicting severe wounds all over the body of the Elephants they hire from others for festival parading. The Cycle Chain tightened at the lower portion of its front right leg have a extended chain towards the top of its body which is pulled by the mahout who sits atop the Elephant whenever the Elephant show any disobedience. Whenever such pulling of the chain is made, the iron nails hidden between the portions of the Motor Cycle chain tightened around the front leg create high degree of pain in the body of the Elephant. Parading the Elephant with such a BREAK SYSTEM is a violation of PCA Act 1960. We submit this plea expecting that your subordinates will visit this Elephant at the festival place and free the Elephant from this type of unlawful chaining and will arrest the mahout, the Elephant contractor and its custodian as early as possible. The Elephant must be provided with urgent veterinary care to heal the wounds created by its owner, contractor and the mahout. The photograph also shows that the mahout use the banned weapon named Ankush to prompt the Elephant to rise its forehead up and up for a long period of time. This type of prompting this Elephant is a violation of PCA Act 1960 and such a posture of the Elephant is quite unlawful because, it cannot use its trunk to pick up leaves from the ground to eat as per its requirement.
