The Issue

Eliminate Child Support Payments in True Equal Joint Custody Arrangements When Both Parents Directly Provide for the Child. Purpose: To create a child support system that recognizes when both parents share equal parenting time and directly provide for their child's needs in their own households. Proposal: When parents have equal joint physical custody, meaning the child spends substantially equal time living with both parents, child support should not automatically be required. Reasoning: In a true shared custody arrangement, both parents maintain a home for the child and provide directly for daily needs, including: Food Clothing Housing Utilities Transportation School supplies Activities Medical and other necessities. When both parents are actively providing for the child, automatic child support payments may create an unnecessary financial burden and may not accurately reflect the contributions of both households. Alternative Approach: Instead of automatic monthly payments, parents with equal custody should work together to share agreed-upon expenses, such as: Medical costs not covered by insurance School expenses Extracurricular activities Special needs Major child-related expenses. Goal: The goal is not to reduce a child's support, but to create a system that recognizes both parents' contributions, encourages equal involvement, and ensures that financial responsibility is shared fairly between both households. Conclusion: A child benefits when both parents are involved emotionally and financially. Laws should encourage cooperation, shared responsibility, and meaningful parenting time while avoiding unnecessary financial conflict between parents.
