Petition to Reconsider Grade 6/7 Split Classes at Jack Hulland Elementary for 2025–2026 School Year

 Superintendent Franes

Re: Request for Dedicated Grade 6 and Grade 7 Classrooms

We, the undersigned parents, guardians, educators, and community members, respectfully petition Superintendent Christine Franes to reconsider the proposed classroom configuration for the 2025–2026 academic year, specifically the plan to place all Grade 7 students in split Grade 6/7 classrooms.

Grade 7 is a critical transitional year for students as they prepare to enter high school. It is a time when they benefit most from focused, age-appropriate academic challenges, consistent peer relationships, and dedicated opportunities for leadership and social-emotional development. Placing them in split-grade settings with younger Grade 6 students risks diluting these essential experiences.

Educators who work closely with this age group have expressed similar concerns. Teachers emphasize that Grade 7 students require distinct programming and space to mature, build confidence, and prepare for high school expectations. They also highlight the unique role of Grade 7 as a capstone year in elementary education—one that should be marked by leadership opportunities and developmental support.

We are deeply concerned that housing the entire Grade 7 cohort in split classes will:

·      Limit age-appropriate academic and social-emotional instruction

·      Reduce meaningful peer bonding and leadership experiences

·      Compromise preparation for the transition to high school

We believe a more effective and developmentally appropriate approach would be to create dedicated Grade 6 and Grade 7 classrooms, or at the very least a more balanced configuration that maintains the integrity of this formative year.

We urge the administration to re-evaluate the current plan and work with families, staff, and the School Council to implement a model that supports the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students—especially those in Grade 7.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and your continued commitment to student success.

Sincerely,

28
