The Issue

To Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and Local Legislators:

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that Erie County reconsider its decision to opt out of New York’s youth hunting program, which allows 12- and 13-year-olds to hunt deer with firearms under adult supervision. This decision, made with the stated intention of addressing safety concerns, overlooks the following critical points:

 1. Hunting Participation Declines Without Early Engagement: The longer children are prevented from experiencing hunting, the less likely they are to develop an interest in this time-honored tradition. Youth hunting encourages conservation awareness, discipline, and family bonding.

 2. Economic Loss for Erie County: Hunters from Erie County are now traveling to neighboring counties to participate, which diverts potential sales tax revenue from our local economy. Erie County has abundant hunting properties, and this policy deters their use, depriving the county of additional economic activity.

 3. Proven Safety Record: Since the introduction of New York’s youth hunting program, there has been no evidence of increased risks or negative impacts involving youth and firearms. This decision is not supported by data or the experiences of other counties across the state.

 4. Parental Rights: Parents are best positioned to determine whether their children are ready to handle the responsibility of hunting under the supervision of experienced adults. This law undermines parental authority and decision-making.

 5. Property Rights: Many of us own property in Erie County specifically for hunting and outdoor recreation. As property taxpayers, we believe we have the right to responsibly use our land in a manner consistent with state hunting laws.

 6. Erie County Stands Alone: Erie County is the only county in New York that has opted out of the youth hunting program. This places an unnecessary and unique restriction on local families compared to those in every other part of the state. We urge Erie County to align with the rest of New York by adopting the youth hunting program. This program supports family traditions, local economies, and the responsible introduction of children to outdoor activities. It is time to reverse this short-sighted decision and give Erie County families the same opportunities as every other county in New York.
