The Issue

As of April 28th, 2025 Surfline installed a new live surf camera at Windansea. The cam offers a twenty-four hour high resolution video feed of Windansea and Big Rock. This surf cam is a problem because:

  1.  It shows in excessive detail protected surf spots drawing large crowds of inexperienced surfers to an already impacted lineup creating hazards for surfers and generally degrading the surfing experience for everyone.
  2. It commoditizes visual access to the coast in the name of profit for a international corporation at the expense of the local community.
  3. It is a gross community privacy violation to be filmed without consent  on a regular basis.
  4. No community input was gathered before the installation of the surf camera.
  5. The camera is a visual eye sore, extends beyond the coastal height limit, and no coastal development permit was processed before the installation of the surf camera

By signing this petition you will be:

  1. Taking Surfline to task for violating the community at large
  2. Sending a message to the camera's host that by hosting the camera they will become a community pariah.

Our ultimate goals are to:

  1. Get the camera removed
  2. Codify language into the San Diego Municipal Code which states that public facing live stream cameras need to go through a development and approval process that takes into consideration community input before being installed.
