Petition to MOE: Stop iPads and Chromebooks

Petition to MOE: Stop iPads and Chromebooks
The Issue
We, the undersigned parents and concerned citizens, urge the Ministry of Education (MOE) to reconsider and discontinue the use of personal learning devices (PLDs), such as iPads and Chromebooks, as educational tools in schools. We believe that the current implementation of this program is causing more harm than good.
1. Distractions
Many parents have reported that these devices serve as distractions rather than enhancing the learning experience. Several teachers have also observed students using PLDs for non-educational activities during lessons. These activities include:
- Checking messages and playing games.
- Browsing social media platforms.
- Listening to music on Spotify or watching YouTube.
- Taking photos of teachers and classmates, which may lead to inappropriate behavior.
Students are reportedly spending three to four hours a day on non-educational activities using their iPads.
2. Challenges in Monitoring and Managing PLDs at Home
Parents are now tasked with managing their children’s PLDs on top of their existing devices, such as smartphones. The PLDs, intended for educational purposes, are increasingly becoming tools for distraction and even deception. Some students falsely claim that they need their PLDs for assignments when, in reality, they use them for entertainment.
3. Loss of Trust and Impact on Family Relationships
The misuse of these devices has led to a breakdown of trust between parents and their children.
Many parents feel like they are constantly policing their children’s behavior, turning their homes into battlegrounds over PLD use. Even educators acknowledge the challenges posed by these devices.
Our Request
We urge the Ministry of Education (MOE) to:
To stop PLDs program and consider alternative educational tools or methods that minimize distractions and enhance student engagement without compromising their focus and attention.
By prioritizing our children's learning environment and minimizing distractions, we believe that MOE can help ensure a more effective and enriching educational experience for students.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that MOE takes action to address these concerns and re-evaluates the use of PLDs in our schools.
