Petition to Implement Mental Health Screenings in Massachusetts Public Schools

The Issue

Support the Student Mental Health Evaluation Act (SMHEA)
To: Massachusetts State Legislators, the Department of Education, and Local School Boards

We, the undersigned, urge Massachusetts lawmakers to take immediate action to address the youth mental health crisis by implementing annual mental health screenings for students in grades 3-12 in all public schools.

Why This Matters:

  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10-18.
  • 1 in 6 children experience a diagnosable mental health disorder annually, yet 60% do not receive treatment.
  • In Massachusetts, 22% of high school students have seriously considered suicide, and 10% have attempted it.
  • Early intervention reduces hospitalizations, emergency mental health services, juvenile justice involvement, and long-term social welfare costs.

What This Petition Supports:
✅ Routine, Confidential Mental Health Screenings for students in grades 3-12 to detect early signs of anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns.
✅ Parental Involvement & Transparency – Parents will be informed and have the option to opt-out.
✅ School-Based Mental Health Resources – Schools will connect students in need with counselors, therapists, and community-based support.
✅ Mental Health Education & Stigma Reduction – Training for teachers, staff, and parents to recognize warning signs and provide appropriate support.
✅ State & Federal Funding Allocation – Ensuring schools have the resources to implement screenings without overburdening local budgets.

How This Benefits Massachusetts:

  • Reduced Emergency Room Visits & Hospitalizations – Saves millions in healthcare costs.
  • Improved Educational Outcomes – Mentally healthy students perform better academically and are less likely to drop out.
  • Lower Juvenile Crime Rates – Early intervention helps prevent behavioral issues from escalating.
  • Economic Growth – Increased workforce readiness and reduced reliance on social welfare programs.
