Petition to Enhance Safety at the Clarkston Toll Roundabout Pedestrian Crossing
The Issue
Urgent Request to Improve Safety Measures at the Clarkston Toll Roundabout Pedestrian Crossing
Dear East Renfrewshire Council,
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the safety of pedestrians at the crossing located at the Clarkston Toll roundabout. The current conditions pose significant risks to all pedestrians, including children, elderly residents, and individuals with disabilities.
Issues Identified:
- High Traffic Volume: The roundabout is situated on a busy road with a high volume of vehicular traffic, which increases the risk of accidents.
- Poor Visibility: Insufficient and unclear signage makes it difficult for both pedestrians and drivers to see the crossing.
- Non-existent Crossing Signals: The are currently NO pedestrian signals and this coupled with a give way on roundabout, leads to confusion and unsafe crossing conditions.
- Speeding Vehicles: Despite existing speed limits, vehicles often travel at speeds that endanger pedestrians attempting to cross.
- Previous Accidents and Fatalities: There have been several accidents and, tragically, a recent fatality at this crossing. According to Police Scotland, on May 20, 2024, a man was fatally injured in a road crash at the Clarkston Toll roundabout, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures. Additionally, previous incidents have been reported, such as the tragic accident covered by BBC News on April 17, 2012, emphasizing the persistent danger at this crossing.
- Essential Route for Community: This crossing is a main route for local schools, amenities, and health services, which increases pedestrian traffic and underscores the necessity for a safer crossing environment.
Proposed Safety Enhancements:
- Installation of Traffic Lights with Pedestrian Signals: Implement traffic lights that include pedestrian signals to provide clear, designated crossing times.
- Improved Lighting: Increase the lighting around the crossing area to enhance visibility for both pedestrians and drivers.
- Enhanced Signage: Erect clear, visible signage well ahead of the crossing to alert drivers to slow down and prepare to stop for pedestrians.
- Speed Bumps or Raised Crosswalks: Introduce speed bumps or raised crosswalks to naturally reduce vehicle speeds near the crossing.
- Regular Monitoring and Maintenance: Establish a schedule for regular monitoring and maintenance of the crossing to ensure all safety features remain effective and in good condition.
We believe that these changes will save lives, significantly reduce the risk of accidents and improve safety for all pedestrians. Ensuring a safe crossing environment is essential for the well-being of our community.
We kindly request that East Renfrewshire Council prioritise this matter and take immediate action to implement these safety measures. Your attention to this urgent issue is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your consideration and prompt action.
