We, the INCOSE WMA Chapter, request your support for the creation of a new, unique Systems Engineering job series. We urge the U.S. Federal Government (e.g., OPM) to take action. Background: For years, the Systems Engineering profession has been grouped under the broad 0801 General Engineer job series classification. This no longer reflects the unique contributions Systems Engineers make every day. The field of Systems Engineering is evolving, and should be treated like every other engineering discipline with its own federal job series number (08xx). Across government, industry and academia, Systems Engineers are building the future—designing complex systems, guiding responsible innovation, and ensuring that public programs run safely and effectively. As critical technologies like AI become more integrated into federal missions, the work of Systems Engineers becomes even more essential. Creating a dedicated job series would affirm the value of this profession, open clearer discussions for career planning, and help attract the next generation of talent.
