Petition to Alleviate the Chronic Poverty & Homelessness in Asbury Park
The Issue
We, the People of Asbury Park, Monmouth County, New Jersey, the United States and the WORLD DEMAND that Mayor Ed Johnson begin Immediately to Create Jobs, Enact Rent Control and build 1,000 Units of Affordable Housing to help the Chronically Poor here in the City of Asbury Park, which lies in one of the RICHEST and most Blessed Counties IN America.
And we Demand it NOW, not 5 years from now!
Over 10,470 People, over 80% of whom are Minorities, out of a Total Population of only 17,450 in the City of Asbury Park, are facing a Massive Gentrification attempted to be carried out against them, by the "Redevelopment People" here. The ONLY thing that has radically slowed the past Genrtrification, which swept out almost 10% of our Population, is the current "Recession" (Or is it a Depression?), which has made the City and our Landlords back off on forcing people out of Properties which are right NOW generating a Rentlal Income that is secure for them.
But once this Recession/ Depression ends, it won't take long for another "All out Movement" to once again start the intentional Gentrification of the People, those of Color mostly, all over again!
During mostly the years of 2002-2006, I personally told the City Council (As did at least 5 Ministers) that they MUST Concentrate on THREE main things we need to have a Fair & Humanitarian (As well as Fiscally Sound) Redevelopment Process:
1. 122 Cities in New Jersey already HAVE Rent Control, and Asbury Park NEEDS it badly, because it not only helps Low Income People tremendously, but it also helps overall to "Stabilize the entire Economy" in a City, particularly a heavily Urban City, such as here in Asbury Park.
2. Secondly, Affordable Housing is Very Badly Needed in Asbury Park, not only for the Poor, but also for "Worforce People", like Teaschers, Firemen, the Police and Nurses, just to illustrate a few obvious examples.
3. Third, but not the least Important, we need a LOT of Living Wage Jobs for the People of Asbury Park, NJ! This can happen by replicating the Model for a Program to create Jobs set up by an Organization called "Project Quest", in San Antonio, TX. ( http://www.questsa.org/ ).
So, in order to be able to Replicate this intensive form of Creating a Jobs Program for Asbury Park People, and getting Rent Control & Affordable Housing for them, I will require the help of many other "Good Hearted Souls", from throughout Monmouth County, NJ, all of New Jersey AND People from all OVER the Nation!
So would you all PLEASE Sign this Petition which will be forwarded to the City Manager and the City Council in Asbury Park, as well as Congressman Pallone and Senators Lautenberg & Menendez, here in NJ, as well as our County Freeholders, and our Governor, the Slasher, Chris Christie ?
And Please, could EVERY Signer "Pass the Word" and get at least 10 more people to sign our Petition of Charity & Hope for the Abused & Neglected Poor of our beautiful "City by the Sea", Asbury Park?
