Petition to Address the Pet Rental Crisis in Nova Scotia

The Issue

As the beautiful hues of autumn begin to adorn our picturesque province, a silent, heartbreaking issue lurks in the shadows, affecting many families in our neighbourhoods. This issue is the increasing number of pets, especially cats, being abandoned or surrendered due to the concerning housing and rental situation in Nova Scotia.

Spay Day Nova Scotia recently shared a heart rendering story which reminded us all of the gravity of this situation when Carlos, an 8-year-old gentleman cat, was brought to them tearfully by a young boy and his family, victims of the housing crisis. Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident. Shelters are overflowing with stories like Carlos’s. The Spay Day House is filled to capacity with a growing waiting list. Many families are being torn apart from their furry loved ones due to the strict no-pets rental policies.

Nova Scotia has been successful in addressing the cat overpopulation crisis in the past, and now we face a new challenge. There are stories of families who've had pets for over a decade being forced to part ways due to changing rental policies. It's heart-wrenching and, frankly, unnecessary.

Ontario has taken a laudable step in this direction by implementing laws that mandate rentals to be pet-friendly. As a proud Nova Scotian, I firmly believe that if Ontario can lead in this direction, we in Nova Scotia can follow suit, and perhaps, even surpass.

Premier Houston, with Carlos as our symbol of hope and change, we urge you to champion this cause and help enact a law that ensures rentals in our province are pet-friendly. This isn't just about pets; it's about families, love, and the very fabric of our community.

We call upon you, our local MLAs and politicians to open a dialogue on this issue and work towards a more inclusive, compassionate rental system. Let us ensure that no child or family ever has to endure the pain of parting from their cherished pets due to housing constraints.

After all, where there's a will, there's a way. It's how we've always done things here in Nova Scotia, and it's how together, we can bring about change.

We appreciate your attention to this matter and hope for a brighter future for our families and their pets.

Warm regards,

Kate Sullivan
