Petition to Address Illegal Fishing and Authorize the Use of Force

The issue

To address the devastating impact of illegal fishing in Western Africa's coastal waters and harness its economic potential, we, the undersigned citizens and concerned individuals, hereby petition the governments of Senegal, Mauritania, Liberia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and other relevant authorities in the region to take immediate and coordinated action:

Enforce Strict Regulations: We urge the governments to strengthen regulations governing fishing practices, including a comprehensive ban on ship-to-ship transfers of catches at sea. This will significantly curb the activities of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing vessels operating in the region.

Investment in Patrols: We call for increased investment in patrolling "hot spots" of IUU fishing. By allocating resources to enhance maritime surveillance and enforcement efforts, governments can better monitor and prevent unauthorized fishing activities.

Promote Indigenous Fishing Fleets and Processing Industries: We advocate for the development of local fishing fleets and fish processing industries. By investing in these sectors, governments can create employment opportunities for citizens, especially for artisanal fishers and women, while simultaneously reducing youth unemployment.

Collaboration and Coordination: We encourage regional governments to collaborate with international organizations, neighboring countries, and stakeholders to collectively address the issue of overfishing. A coordinated effort will enhance the effectiveness of measures taken against IUU fishing.

Economic Benefits: We emphasize the potential economic benefits that could be reaped from ending illegal fishing and boosting the fishing and processing industries. By leveraging these opportunities, Western African countries could generate billions of dollars in extra wealth, enhance food security, and improve overall economic growth.

Environmental Sustainability: We stress the importance of maintaining the long-term sustainability of marine resources. By curbing IUU fishing, governments will contribute to preserving marine ecosystems and protecting the livelihoods of future generations.

We believe that by taking these actions, governments in Western Africa can not only safeguard their marine resources and ecosystem but also uplift the economic well-being of their citizens. The opportunity to generate significant wealth, create jobs, and enhance food security should not be missed due to unchecked illegal fishing practices. Let us work together to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for Western Africa and its people.
