We, the ANCYL Ekurhuleni, students, and community members of Ekurhuleni and surrounding areas,hereby petition for the urgent establishment of a University of Ekurhuleni.

Ekurhuleni is one of South Africa’s largest metropolitan municipalities, with a vibrant population, diverse industries, and a growing youth demographic. Despite its size and economic significance, the region lacks a dedicated public university. This absence forces thousands of students to travel long distances or relocate to other provinces to pursue higher education, creating financial and social burdens. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the establishment of a new University of Science and Innovation in Ekurhuleni during his 2020 State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Reasons for Establishment

• Access to Education: A local university will expand opportunities for young people who cannot afford to study far from home.
• Economic Growth: Universities stimulate local economies by creating jobs, fostering innovation, and attracting investment.
• Community Development: A university will serve as a hub for research, cultural exchange, and social upliftment.
•  Skills for the Future: Ekurhuleni’s industries (manufacturing, aviation, logistics, energy) require specialized skills. A university can tailor programs to meet these needs.
• to prioritize and allocate resources for the establishment of the University of Ekurhuleni.

This petition is being formally submitted to the President at the ongoing Lekgotla taking place at Birchwood Hotel - Boksburg.

We call on the Department of Higher Education and other relevant authorities to take immediate action in planning and funding the establishment of the University of Ekurhuleni.
