The Issue

We, the students who signed this petition, want clear, fair, and transparent rules about how AI detection tools are used when grading our work.

Tools that are supposed to detect AI writing are being used by teachers, but they are not reliable. They can make mistakes and flag original student work as AI-generated. Being falsely accused of something like that is stressful, frustrating, and scary. It can lead to unfair punishment, damage a student’s reputation, and make students feel like their hard work doesn’t matter. It also makes it difficult for students to feel confident and creative in their writing when there is always a fear of being wrongly judged.

We believe that discussions of how AI detection tools are used should include student input. Students, teachers, and administrators should work together to make sure AI detection tools are used responsibly and fairly, if they are used at all.

We are asking for a few things:

  1. Teachers should focus more on creating assignments that prevent the use of AI rather than relying on tools to catch and punish AI use.
  2. Students, teachers, and administrators should work together to create clear guidelines about when and how AI detection tools can be used.
  3. Students should not be accused or punished based only on an AI detection result. If something is flagged, there should be a fair process where students can explain their work and show evidence of their writing process.
  4. Any AI tools used by the school have to protect student privacy. Student work should not be stored, shared, or used to train AI.
  5. Students should be told when AI detection tools are being used, how they work, and how the results are interpreted within the context of their past work and writing style.
  6. There needs to be protection in place so students are not harmed by false results.

Overall, we are asking for policies that are fair and respectful of students. Academic honesty matters, but so does trust. Right now, trust is at risk. We want a set of rules that supports academic honesty and trust without putting students in a position where they feel constantly suspected or unsafe. We are asking school administrators and teachers to take this seriously by creating clear and fair policies that prioritize the privacy and protection of students.
