Petition for Extending Access Hours at West End's "Point"

Petition for Extending Access Hours at West End's "Point"
The Issue
To: New Orleans Municipal Yacht Harbor Management Corporation (NOMYHMC), Council Member Eugene Greene, and relevant city officials
We, the undersigned, are residents, fishermen, and community members who regularly enjoy the natural beauty and recreational opportunities provided by West End's "Point". This cherished location not only serves as a prime fishing spot but also as a place to experience one of New Orleans' most beautiful sunsets.
Concerns:
The current curfew at the Point ends at "sunset", which restricts access during prime fishing times, right when fishing conditions are ideal.
Unlike the nearby public boat launch, which has a 9 PM curfew, the Point's earlier sunset curfew limits practical usage of this community space.
Access without vehicles past curfew is impractical, especially for those carrying fishing gear, live bait, or catch.
An unofficial earlier closure by a volunteering local resident, prior to the designated sunset curfew, further restricts access and enjoyment of this public area and should be forbidden.
Request: We petition for the alignment of the Point's curfew with that of the nearby public boat launch at 9 PM. This change would allow residents and visitors to fully enjoy fishing and recreational activities without unnecessary restrictions, while still respecting city noise ordinances and safety concerns.
Additional Support:
Installation of crime prevention measures such as crime cameras have already been implemented, addressing safety concerns without needing restrictive curfews.
A later curfew would not only increase the enjoyment and usage of the Point but also enhance the community's quality of life.
We urge Council Member Eugene Greene and the NOMYHMC to consider our request to extend the curfew hours at the Point to 9 PM, ensuring equitable access and enjoyment for all. Thank you for considering this petition to make our community a more inclusive and enjoyable place for everyone.
