Petition for Academic Fairness in Math Classes (MCR3U) in St. Francis Xavier High School
The Issue
Dear Mr Power,
We, the students of the Period 1 and 2 [Grade 11 University] Math classes at St. Francis Xavier High School, are writing to bring to your attention an urgent issue that has significantly impacted our learning and academic performance. Since the departure of our regular teacher, we have been taught by a series of substitute teachers. Despite their efforts, the inconsistency and variance in teaching quality have severely affected our ability to grasp the material effectively.
The primary concern lies in our current method of learning, which heavily relies on memorization without a thorough understanding of the concepts. This approach has led to a noticeable decline in our test averages and overall comprehension, which is evident from our recent tests results—showing grades significantly lower than what we achieved under the teaching of our regular teacher.
The lack of a consistent and qualified teacher has not only made learning challenging but also places us at a clear disadvantage compared to other classes who benefit from stable and effective teaching. We find ourselves in a position where we are compelled to self-teach the curriculum, dedicating extra hours daily, which is both inefficient and exhausting.
Given these circumstances, we respectfully put forth the following requests to ensure fairness and support our academic success:
1. Adjustments to our grading to reflect the challenges posed by the frequent changes in teaching staff. We propose that our academic averages should not be lowered due to the current teaching disruptions.
2. Alternatively, we suggest that our tests be made easier to better match what we've been able to learn under these conditions, instead of being the same as the tests given to other classes with better learning circumstances.
We believe these measures will provide a temporary yet necessary relief from the undue academic pressures we face and will help maintain fairness in evaluating our performance during this time.
We appreciate your immediate attention to this matter and look forward to your support in finding a viable solution that will help us in our academic journey.
Thank you for your understanding and consideration.
Sincerely, Period 1 and 2 students (MCR3U) at St. Francis Xavier High School
