Petition for a Dedicated Minister for Disabled People in UK Government
Disabled people deserve more than broken promises and budget cuts. They deserve leadership. They deserve justice. They deserve a voice at the top table.
Currently, the UK Government does not have a dedicated Minister for Disabled People. Instead, disability issues are folded into a joint role within the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)—a department focused on benefits, not rights. This setup is failing disabled people across the country.
Why the Current System Isn’t Working
Welfare Over Rights
Disability policy is treated as a welfare issue, not a human rights issue. The DWP’s priority is cutting costs—not empowering disabled people.
Tragic Failures
Multiple cases have emerged of disabled people dying while navigating the benefits system. These are not isolated incidents—they’re symptoms of a broken structure.
No Time, No Focus
The current minister oversees everything from Universal Credit to housing and carers’ allowances. Disability rights are buried under bureaucracy.
Cuts and Exclusion
£5 billion in disability benefit cuts have been proposed. Disabled people are being pushed to the margins, not brought into the conversation.
What We’re Calling For
We request the creation of a Dedicated Minister for Disabled People—someone whose sole job is to fight for disability rights, inclusion, and accessibility across every part of government.
This minister must:
Sit at Cabinet level, with real power and influence
Work across departments—health, transport, housing, education, justice
Be accountable to disabled people and their organisations
Champion co-production, not token consultation
Drive cultural change, not just policy tweaks
📣 Add Your Voice
This is about justice. It’s about dignity. It’s about making sure disabled people are not just supported—but respected, empowered, and included.

Disabled people deserve a minister who sees beyond benefits. They deserve a champion.
