PETITION TO THE UAW: We the undersigned, hereby petition the UAW to reopen negotiations with General Motors, with the sole purpose of eliminating the two-tier wage system. We are demanding the reinstatement of the wage progression system for all newly hired employees and all part-time employees. Two-tier wages are a blatant form of discrimination in the workplace. It is a violation of our union's core principle of Equal Pay for Equal Work. It is a tool that creates divisions amongst our members and generates a less than hospitable work environment. Two-tier wages violate several laws concerning labor. They violate the Equal Pay Act of 1963, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, MI Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act of 1976 and the Lilly Ledbetter Act of 2009. Following the law should always be the priority of the UAW. In these harsh economic times it is more important than ever before to ensure equality in the workplace. To allow for such a discrepancy in wages is to foster an environment of racial and gender bias against all working people. The UAW must remain at the forefront of civil rights in all matters of life, especially when it comes to wage parity. In conclusion, we the membership are demanding that the officials of our union follow the will of the people. End two-tier wages and end this vulgar discrimination.
