Pesticides in North Somerset
Glyphosate is routinely found in human bodies where it accumulates. It is in our rivers, washed from pavements down our storm drains and into our local watercourses. We do not know all the harm it is causing. This poison also destroys habitats that could be used by wildlife, upsets the microbial balance in soils, has been proved to harm bees and other beneficial insects and earthworms. That is why local authorities throughout the UK are stopping its use, including our neighbour, Bath & NE Somerset Council.
Yet North Somerset Council, a unitary authority which has declared a climate and ecological emergency, still sprays it over our streets and pavements. Sometimes it kills residents' plants inside their gardens. North Somerset Council knows it is harmful so they do not spray children's play areas - but children do go to other places, including the street, the pavements and their own front gardens. Their long-term health is at risk because of herbicide spray.
We ask the council to stop this devastation of nature and spend our council tax on better things for our well-being.
