Permit Pets aboard cabins on trains in Victoria

Permit Pets aboard cabins on trains in Victoria
The issue
I am a proud and loving dog owner living in Melbourne. Like many others, I have found that dogs have become an integral part of our daily lives, not just textbook service animals. I feel a sense of joy and security traveling with my dog on Melbourne metropolitan trains and trams, a feeling I am sure many can relate to. However, this joy comes to a halt when I consider traveling outside central Melbourne, as pets are not allowed on trains throughout Victoria, unless in the cargo hold.
This policy individualises Melbourne and places the rest of Victoria at a disadvantage. Those living outside Melbourne do not have the same rights to travel with their pets, an issue that has created a divide. There's no logical reason behind this disparity. The same animals travelling perfectly well in trams should be allowed on Victoria's trains too.
Today, pets are increasingly recognized as valued and cherished members of the family. A 2016 report by Animal Medicines Australia, found that about 5.7 million households across the country have pets. The same report noted an escalation in the emotional attachment Australians have towards their pets, asserting that almost 90% believe pets make them happier and more relaxed.
By not allowing pets on trains in Victoria, we are limiting the freedom of these millions of pet owners and isolating them unnecessarily. Most importantly, we are denying the happiness and benefits that journeying with a pet can bring to so many people.
Let us change this. Let us unify Victoria in their regard of pets and their travel policies. We urge Victoria's transport authority to recognise our needs, and allow pets on trains throughout the state. This change will not only benefit pet owners but also contribute to enhancing the inclusivity that the state of Victoria stands for. It's time we stopped selective access and allowed our furry family members to travel with us regardless of the destination in Victoria. Please sign the petition to make this change happen.
