Petition Calls to Ban Animal Zoo in Philippines

Petition Calls to Ban Animal Zoo in Philippines
The Issue
This Petition Calls to Ban Animal Zoo in Philippines ( The first zoo in Asia (Manila Zoo).) To focus on evolving our Animal rights consciousness and follow the steps of other countries who did the ethical thing to do and empathize with all the wild animals that are not meant to be prisoners and be slaves for entertainment and worst is to pass this culture to our children as a norm which is only tolerating such insensitivity towards animals that is not necessary at all in this 21’st century.

National Geographic seems to agree in abolishing all Zoo in the world as per an article from their website :
"Zoos are prisons for animals, camouflaging their cruelty with conservation claims," Mimi Bekhechi, director of international programmes at PETA, explains. "Animals in zoos suffer tremendously, both physically and mentally. They often display neurotic behavior, like repetitive pacing, swaying, and bar biting. Not surprising, perhaps, considering the typical polar bear enclosure is one million times smaller than the area they would naturally roam."
PETA isn't alone. In April, ethical tour operator Responsible Travel — after consultation with wildlife charity Born Free Foundation — axed trips that include zoo visits. It's the first travel company to publicly make such a move.
"Only 15% of the thousands of species held in zoos are considered 'threatened'," says Will Travers OBE, President of Born Free. "An even smaller proportion are part of captive breeding programmes and, of those, a tiny fraction has been released back into the wild. That's not a record that justifies tens of millions of wild animals kept in zoos."
PETA's Bekhechi adds, the aim of breeding programmes is just "to produce baby animals to attract visitors."
Some, however, argue that children benefit from zoos. "We engage huge audiences with wildlife, inspiring the conservationists of tomorrow," argues zoological director of ZSL London and Whipsnade Zoos, Professor David Field. That claim is up for debate. A 2014 study by the Society for Conservation Biology found that of over 2,800 children surveyed following visits to London Zoo, 62% showed no positive learning outcomes.
As the world is evolving compassionately towards animals, there have been many petitions and movements already made to abolish animal captivity, zoos, and circuses. The first progressive action headed by PETA is banning of circuses and animal use for entertainment and there were 27 countries now banning wild animal circuses, the list of countries: according to StopCircusSuffering.com: Austria, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, El Salvador, England, Estonia, Greece, Guatemala, Ireland, Israel, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Mexico, The Netherlands, Paraguay, Peru, Romania, Scotland, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia.
Major Reasons why Manila Zoo must be closed down and instead be replaced with Animal Sanctuary, Conservation and Educational Center:
1.) Manila Zoo was called out many times by PETA for much neglect and malnourishment all their animals are experiencing, the most controversial of all is the lonely old elephant Mali in which In 2013 a petition was made by PETA that earned 60,177 signatures and was also featured in mainstream news. So many experts and people of influence spoke for Mali the Elephant's freedom including French film legend: Brigitte Bardot, wildlife conservationist: Dr.Jane Goodall, and Nobel Prize-winning author J.M. Coetzee. It has also received the support of the late Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, who filed a resolution to study the transfer of Mali to the sanctuary, according to an earlier report. Despite this, Manila Zoo has insisted that Mali is better off in their custody.
2.) Mayor Isko Moreno and their government officials refuses to follow the advice of all International Animal care experts and instead chose to keep Mali the Elephant in Manila Zoo amidst the recent ABS-CBN news where it is clearly stated that the best interest and care that Mali the lonely Elephant can have can be met by following the directive of PETA (The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) they are urging since 2013 to move Mali the Elephant to an Elephant sanctuary in Thailand. "In nature, female elephants stay in close-knit, extended groups for their entire lives. These complex social animals need to be with others of their kind in order to lead happy, fulfilled lives," Rochelle Regodon, PETA's Policy Manager, said in a letter dated December 29, 2020. "Many elephants who are transferred to sanctuaries have histories similar to Mali’s, but sanctuary caregivers find that these intelligent animals are highly adaptable and welcome new situations, especially those that greatly improve their welfare, as a sanctuary environment would for Mali," she said. "To suggest that we shouldn’t give her a chance at being healthy and happy in the company of other elephants shows a lack of understanding of the nature of elephants and does her a disservice," she said. Mali needs to be taken to a sanctuary as the Manila Zoo does not have veterinarians to check on the animal's "debilitating foot problems, the leading cause of death in captive elephants," she said. Regodon underscored that Mali would not have to fend for herself in an elephant sanctuary in Thailand "that has agreed to take her." "Mali is guaranteed hands-on care 24 hours a day there and would never go hungry," she said. "This sanctuary has rehabilitated many captive elephants, and like us, it’s confident that Mali would adjust to her new life quickly and easily since female elephants form very strong bonds with other females," she said. Agriculture chief urged to free PH elephant PETA is also willing to shoulder all costs to transport Mali to Thailand, Regodon said in her letter, noting that sedatives are not needed in the process. "The key to ensuring a low-stress transport for Mali is proper training well in advance of the move, not the use of sedatives," she said. "PETA stands ready to make all the necessary logistic and financial arrangements," she said. "We guarantee that the transfer would not cost the city or your constituents a cent," she said. The organization has also offered to "arrange a trip" for the Manila mayor "trip at no expense to the city" for him to be ablt "to visit the sanctuary to see firsthand the wonderful life that it can offer Mali." Over the years, animal rights groups have been calling for the release of animals from zoos, saying these should not live in captivity.
3.) Manila Zoo gained much bad reputation for the past years where visitors have been blogging and spreading pictures of many poor malnourished animals including a video of a Lion having some convulsions.
5.) Animal captivity, slavery, Zoos and Circuses is our new age immoral practice that must be abolished due to its harm to wild animals and instead, these places must be replaced with animal sanctuaries, rescue and educational centers so that Children and people can be educated of Proper care to all animals instead of taking part in the continued normalization of what is wrong just as what most Ethical Animal Right Organizations in the world are standing for.
As a vegan parent I want my children to grow in the future that already bans animal slavery of all kinds and since Zoos are mostly painted by society with the Narrative that it’s for Educational purposes I find it more disturbing that animal captivity for educational and entertainment purposes can still continue to be accepted as a norm just to make more children growing up not learning to have empathy towards all these prisoned zoo animals. Please sign this petition if you care for the same common compassion evolution goal in our world and aim to promote Animal rescue and sanctuaries rather than spend all funds in Animal zoo businesses.
