PETITION TO FREE THE ANIMALS IN MANILA ZOO. LET'S END THEIR SUFFERING IN CAPTIVITY.

The Issue

The zoos deprive animals' freedom to do normal activities in the wild. Malnourished, wounded, and trapped in old, rusty cages are the photos of animals in Manila Zoo circulating over the internet. Disappointment, shock, pity and disbelief were the emotions of people. An example of the problem is the life of the oldest hippopotamus in Manila Zoo, Bertha whose life was full of boredom, misery and deprivation. She only felt freedom through death and even the other animals who died in their prison, the zoo. They are denied a life of freedom and everything that's normal to them. Every aspect of their lives is controlled and manipulated by humans. They are controlled on what they can eat, when they will eat, sleep and who they can mate with. Their enclosures are very tiny and are not the same size as their natural habitats and they are being fooled by humans with fake backgrounds of their habitats. Animals are being controlled, losing their rights, and they do not have their freedom to live on how they want. They are taken from the wild and are forced to live in tiny cages and tanks which makes them to suffer in silence and their misery are unseen despite the people who peer in at them every day.

The zoo which has an annual 480,000 visitors has been criticized due to its inadequate animal care and dirty surroundings due to the improper waste disposal of the visitors. It was opened on January 25, 1959 with over 1000 animals and 90 species. The conditions in which animals being kept are sub-standard. A seizure needs an immediate attention but a video of a lion in Manila Zoo having seizures wasn't taken care of immediately. Elephants like Mali, the world’s loneliest elephant captive in Manila Zoo should not be kept in solitary enclosures and tigers should not be confined in small cages without food or water. African elephants in the wild live more than three times as long as those kept in zoos. Even Asian elephants working in timber camps live longer than those born in zoos and 70% of them are taken from the wild. 40% of the lion cubs die before one month of age in the zoos while in the wild, only 30% of cubs are thought to die before they are in six months old and at least a third of those deaths are due to factor which are absent in zoos, like predation. The Bureau may revoke or cancel the certificate of registration of the zoo for failure to observe the conditions stated under the Republic Act No. 8485 Section 2 which states that such facilities be adequate, clean and sanitary, and that they will not be used for nor cause pain and sufferings to animals is a requirement for the operation of these establishments.

  • Animals would continue to be deprived of their natural habitat if they aren’t set free.
  • Zoos cannot provide the right amount of space that animals have in the wild.
  • Animals could suffer from sickness because of the zoo visitors who feed them with foods which they are not supposed to eat.
  • Humans and the environment are also affected with the improper waste disposal of rubbish in the zoo.
  • The unsanitary and unhygienic enclosures of the zoo will make the health of the animals in danger.
  • Animals will continue to suffer at the hands of humans who maltreat them in the zoo.

An environmentalism philosophical view is used on the target problem as this petition is concerned about creating awareness and a movement for the protection of animals and their rights, for humans to stop their mistreatment to animals, including the improper waste disposal of the visitors of the zoos. Not only the animals are affected when visitors of Manila Zoo throws rubbish on the place but also are the people and the environment. We can’t wait for someone to come and clean after us and we should be disciplined at all times. This petition seeks to protect and conserve the elements of earth’s ecosystem, including animals, air, and land, along with the entire habitats such as forests and oceans. With environmentalism, we can work together to correct damages and prevent future destruction of the ecosystems. Earth as we all know is under threat and if we don’t play an active role in saving it then we are doomed. Everyone is affected in equal measure and it is our responsibility as a citizen of this planet to save our planet and one another.

Sign this petition so that:

  •  Animals won’t die full of misery, boredom and deprivation.
  • They will have their freedom to live without being controlled by humans.
  • They will have the true experience to live in their natural habitat rather than living in a painted fake background of their habitat.
  •  Animals won’t suffer in silence anymore and will regain their animal rights.

In order to free the animals, we and the government should recognize that animals should not be kept in captivity instead, they should be freed because a cage can never be their home. Animals deserve better than a life of abuse and amusement of humans. People should avoid going to zoos and ask everyone to do the same so that the zoos will be forced to stop imprisoning animals. We should speak up on the issue and spread the word for their freedom. We should sign petitions on animal freedom and those who maltreats animals must be punishable by law.

Animals are vulnerable, defenseless and are completely in man's power. It's time to take action on animal freedom and it is up to us to make it happen. Every animal deserves freedom and a life protected from inhumane treatment and suffering. It is time to stand together, advocate for animal freedom, sign this petition and make our voices be heard.
