Peace in Marsabit County.Stop Tribal killings. We need each other

The Issue

It’s very unfortunate that Marsabit county Tribal hate hogs national headlines. On April 10, 2006 Marsabit plane killed all the then four legislators from the county. The leaders, among them the then deputy leader of opposition and North Horr MP Bonaya Godana, Saku MP Abdi Sasura, Moyale MP Guracha Galgallo and Laisamis MP Titus Ngoyoni, were on a peace mission to Marsabit when the military plane they were travelling in crashed. But 13 years later, the county is still grappling with the problem of tribal conflicts. Vicious cycle of tribal clashes in the county has resulted to senseless killings of over 100 innocent lives in span of a year.

This petition seeks to transform a long-running conflict between pastoralists especially Gabra and Borana of Marsabit County in Kenya. We aim to create deeper ties between the two communities that will make tribal conflict increasingly unattractive. SDG No. 16 aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide justice for all, and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. It asks “how can a country develop—how can people eat and teach and learn and work and raise families—without peace? And how can a country have peace without justice, without human rights, without government based on the rule of law?
The goal for this startup is specifically focused on positive peace in Pastoralists communities where sustainable development can take place and be effective. The civic education for majority illiterate nomads in Marsabit County is key pillar to bring permanent solutions to end tribal atrocities turning out to be norm between Borana and Gabra community. People say you can choose a friend but not your neighbour. It is God who placed the Rendille, Gabra, Borana, Burji and all other Kenyans in Marsabit. You cannot remove any of them from here. The locals need to emulate their leaders who were killed in fatal plane crash, learn to co-exist and forge ahead with the county's development. The deaths of our leaders should be a lesson for us to spread the message of peace in Marsabit and Kenya in general.

“Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.” ~ Martin Luther King
