The Issue

Dear Home Secretary Yvette Cooper,

We, the undersigned residents of Bradford, respectfully submit this petition to express our deep concern regarding the ongoing disturbances caused by fireworks in our community.
The actions of lawless individuals disrupt the peace for many, including:

1. Babies and Young Children: Easily awakened and upset by loud noises.

2. Pets and Animals, including birds, hedgehogs, that can become frightened and distressed.

3. Elderly Individuals: Those who may feel isolated and frightened by explosions.

4. Patients in Hospitals: Vunerable Individuals who are recovering from surgery, ill health disturbed and unable to rest due to explosive sounds.

5.Individuals with Autism and Mental Health Challenges: Those who find the sounds overwhelming.

6. Neighbours: Residents living nearby wedding homes who are disturbed, even if not celebrating.

7. Caregivers: People taking care of elderly or disabled family members who may find it harder during explosive fireworks.

8. Emergency Workers: Those who may struggle to focus or rest during their shifts.

9. Working professionals who need restful sleep to perform their jobs well.

10. People with Sleep Problems: Individuals who find it harder to sleep with bomb sound fireworks happening.

Despite our efforts to address this issue with local councillors and MPs, we have seen little progress.
The impact on mental health is severe. Many residents experience anxiety and depression due to ongoing wedding fireworks. We have heard stories from mothers living near wedding venues where fireworks are set off after midnight. One young mother approached a wedding venue at midnight  to ask them to stop, only to be told it is part of the wedding package and they cannot comply.
To tackle this issue, we propose the following measures:
1. Introduction of Silent Fireworks: We request the council to ban the use of noisy fireworks, except during specific celebrations such as Bonfire Night, Diwali, Chinese New Year, and New Year's Eve.
2. Impose Significant Fines: Individuals identified setting off fireworks late at night should face fines of up to £10,000.
These measures would help prevent disturbances and protect residents' well-being.
We, the undersigned, urge Bradford City Council to take immediate action to implement these proposals and restore peace to our good community.
