Paws Off: Outlaw Cat Declawing Nationwide

Paws Off: Outlaw Cat Declawing Nationwide
The Issue
As a devoted cat owner, I’ve come to understand the deep, meaningful bond that forms between humans and their feline companions. Our cats are not just pets — they are beloved family members. They trust us, rely on us, and offer us unconditional love. My own cat has brought immeasurable joy and comfort into my life, and the thought of him experiencing pain at the hands of a procedure that serves no medical purpose is deeply distressing.
This is why I’m speaking out against the continued practice of cat declawing in the United States.
Despite what many people believe, declawing is not a simple or harmless procedure. It is, in fact, a surgical amputation of the last bone in each of a cat’s toes — the equivalent of cutting off a human finger at the first knuckle. It’s painful, traumatic, and often leads to lasting physical and psychological harm. According to the Humane Society, declawed cats are at risk for chronic pain, infections, nerve damage, tissue death, and complications that affect their ability to walk properly. Many cats also suffer from long-term behavioral issues, including increased aggression and litter box avoidance.
Numerous animal welfare organizations — including the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the Feline Veterinary Medical Association — strongly oppose elective declawing. These organizations advocate for more humane alternatives, such as regular nail trimming, scratching posts, behavioral training, and the use of protective nail caps. In countries around the world, declawing has already been banned or severely restricted, recognized as a form of cruelty. Yet here in the United States, the practice remains legal in most states — despite overwhelming evidence of its harm.
We are better than this. We are a nation of animal lovers, and we must do better for the pets who cannot speak for themselves. It is our moral responsibility to protect them from unnecessary suffering. That’s why I am calling on Congress and federal lawmakers to pass legislation that would ban cat declawing nationwide — except in rare cases where it is deemed medically necessary for the animal’s well-being.
By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for compassion, ethics, and progress. You are helping to protect innocent animals from needless pain and giving a voice to those who cannot advocate for themselves.
Let’s come together and make history. Let’s ensure that no cat in America is ever subjected to the cruelty of declawing again.
